Jalal Mahmud is a Research Staff Member at IBM Almaden Research Center and currently manages Personality Analytics research group under IBM Watson Innovation. He also serves as Almaden PIC chair for HCI PIC. 

His research interests include Computational User Modeling, Intelligent User Interface, Web Analytics, Social Media Analysis, Machine Learning and Data Mining.
Dr. Mahmud earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Department of Computer Science, State University of New York at Stony Brook under supervision of Prof. I.V. Ramakrishnan in 2008. He received MS degree in Computer Science from the same department in 2006 and B.SC in Computer Science and Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET).

He has published papers in top rated conferences such as WWW, IUI, SDM, CHI, MobiSys. His publications are indexed by DBLP. Dr. Mahmud received best paper nominations in WWW 2006 and WWW 2007 for his work in Web accessibility. He has also received best paper nominations in IUI 2012 for his work in automating functional manual tests. Recently he has received best paper nomination in IUI 2013 for his work in recommending targeted strangers for crowd-sourced information collection and in IUI 2014 for his work on identifying Twitter users to spread information. He is a senior member of ACM. 

Dr. Mahmud is an IBM Master Inventor. He has 24 issued patents, filed 25 other patents (pending at USPTO), and received 11th Platau Invention Achievement Award. He is a member of IBM Academy of Technology.
